What is STEM/STEAM Learning?

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Add an “A” for “Arts” and you get STEAM—a focus where creativity and artistic exploration is incorporated into math and science learning. Schools that offer STEM or STEAM learning promote hands-on, project-based learning with an emphasis on building the science and math skills that are necessary for students to prepare for college and careers in fields like engineering, computer science, medicine and other high paying, in-demand jobs.

Benefits of STEM/STEAM
STEM programs boost creativity, encourage collaboration, build critical thinking skills, and hone problem solving abilities. These skills are hallmarks of 21st century learning and they help students succeed in whatever educational or career path they choose. Whether building and programming robots, flying drones or working on a Science Fair project, STEM programs get kids excited about learning—and that adds up to better school attendance and academic performance.

The ACCEL Schools Difference

We are a proud member of ACCEL Schools—a public charter school network serving thousands of PK-12 students throughout the United States. ACCEL was founded in 2012 by the early pioneers of online learning. Our leadership believes that all children, regardless of location or socio-economic background, deserve a quality education that prepares them to succeed in school and become productive global citizens.

ACCEL Schools Instructional Model provides:

  • Aligned Academics meet or exceed state standards ensuring your child is on track for rigorous college and career opportunities.
  • Certified, Licensed Teachers and a student-centered staff are united in executing our mission to make a difference in the life trajectory of each student.
  • More Time on Task and double the instructional minutes for ELA and Math maximizes learning in your child’s school day.
  • Short Cycle Assessments keep track of how students are progressing in the program, giving teachers ongoing feedback so they can tailor instruction to your student’s needs.
  • Individualized Instruction driven by assessment data means we are familiar with the needs of each child and set students up for success in each course of study.
  • State Testing Preparation reduces the anxiety often associated with high stakes tests, helping our teachers and students feel confident with the structure and methodology of state exams.
  • Academic Support including education technology, interventional specialists, and instructional aides assist students during the school day. After school tutoring, summer school, and Saturday school programs extend support services beyond the traditional school day and year.
  • Extracurricular Courses & Activities round out our educational offerings providing students social-emotional learning, athletics, arts, service learning & more.

Statement Regarding the Death of George Floyd

Dear ACCEL Staff & Community,

The horrific death of George Floyd coupled with other events that recently occurred in this country are heartbreaking. The video of his death is one of the most horrifying things we have seen in our lives. We grieve. We also acknowledge that many of our employees and students have experienced racism firsthand. This tragedy serves as a grim reminder that as a society, we still have a long way to go to stomp out racism. We want to make it clear that we are committed to fighting against racism and discrimination, and want to assure you that it has no place in our company or at our schools, and it will not be tolerated. We must strive to be inclusive in every way, and we will be planning professional development programs on this topic which will be delivered this summer to our entire school and corporate staff.

We also believe we have an obligation beyond what most companies have. We have consciously chosen to manage schools in some of the most disadvantaged areas of the country and the world. While many school operators avoid these areas, we seek them out. To our surprise and dismay, we are often asked why. The answer is simple. We want to help the children who need it most. Maria and I set out to do this when we founded the company and we have never wavered. If our company does not provide our most vulnerable students with a quality education, they may not have a chance at economic success. A society that does not give every child this chance is, by definition, unjust. The opportunity to succeed must exist regardless of a child’s skin color or economic situation. Unfortunately, far too many children do not have this opportunity.

As we all mourn the death of Mr. Floyd, let us look inward and outward to make sure we are inclusive in our work environments and in our schools. Let us also do our part to end the senseless racism that exists in our society, empower all our students with the belief that they can succeed in the world, and give our students the knowledge and skills they need. Most of all, let us hope and pray they will experience a society in their lifetime where these tragedies no longer occur, and human beings are judged as Dr. King hoped they would be judged someday: “by the content of their character and not the color of their skin.”
Sincerely,

Ron Packard
